Condolences & Tributes

We encourage you to share any memorable photos or stories about John. All tributes placed on and purchased through this memorial website will remain on in perpetuity for future generations.

So very startled and saddened to learn this today. Though much time has passed, he is no less remembered by me as a lovely gentleman, with kindness and caring for others as you seldom see. The community and church surely miss this fine man. My deepest sympathies go to his wonderful family.

I can't believe it has been a year. I have many memories of John, however one of my favorites is of John coming out to CGS while we were hosting a camp session for children of military deployed. He happened to come on a day when the local national guard had brought equipment to camp so the children could learn about various equipment the parents use while deployed. It so happened that a humvee was there and all campers and staff could take a ride, which we did. However, everyone was required to wear a helmet with chin strap appropriately buckled. Somewhere there is a photo of us in the humvee with our helmets on. It is a great, and unique, memory. May all memories keep John alive in your hearts. Mary Helen Franko

I worked at Camp Grady Spruce off and on from 1971 till 2016. I was blessed to know John from my earliest time worked even through my last year. He was such an encouraging person, a great smile, quick wit and just plain fun to be around. In addition to CGS board meetings and fund raising, I remember dove hunts and not too long ago riding in an Army hummer, with the required helmet! May the Steger family rest in God's hands.

So sorry to hear of John’s passing. I have very fond memories of John in the AKL house at CSU. He was the most fit and friendly brother. Our hearts and prayers reach out to the family. What a heritage.

I am an Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity Brother of John's from his days at Colorado State University. John was always held in high respect of all of his Brothers as he was always willing to help others in any way he could and he always was an easy going, smiling person. I also remember him being a cheerleader at CSU. Although I have not seen John in quite a few years I have communicated with him through e-mails from time to time. My heart felt condolences to all of his family. I'm sure, like all of his Fraternity Brothers, you have many, many great memories of John that will stay with you for years.

Judy, I have great memories of John and the entire Steger Family and would like to express my deepest condolences to you and all the family. I was on the staff at Camp Grady Spruce from 1962-1967 in the early years of my 35 year camping career with the YMCA. As I think back on my career, John was the prime example of what a camp counselor should be and was one of the best that I ever worked with. I am truly sorry that I could not attend his Memorial Service. My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. May John Rest in Peace and know that he will be missed.

I didn't know John but knew of him. He had a tremendous impact on Camp Grady Spruce and the YMCA. He will be missed but know he did great work that impacted so many.

Judy and family, I am at a loss to describe the loss I feel and how pale it must be to your loss. In my early days at Camp Grady Spruce, John was a constant icon of the best camp had to offer - enthusiasm, talent, spirit, energy, positive attitude. It was such a privilege to work with and admire him; those were the best of times. I pray you and your family will feel God's peace. Linda and I are trying to rearrange our schedules in the hope we can make it from San Angelo to Grand Saline for services Saturday. Peace be with you.

Judy, Carol and your entire family. I can't express the disbelief when I found John's passing on Facebook. He was a wonderful man. So involved in the community.
I ran into him in Brookshires about 2-3 years ago and he offered me his recipe for kale. I remember how youthful he looked with perfect complexion. Ever since. when I pass the produce aisle and see the kale I think of him. I thought he would live to be a very old man. Our thoughts and prayers are with you always. Love, Sharon & James Presswood
