Services for Mr. DeForest Bascom Carter, 101, of Grand Saline, are scheduled for 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at Sand Flat Baptist Church with Bro. Billy Daniels, Bro. Reggie Day and Bro. Dennis Morris officiating.
Interment will follow in Creagleville Cemetery under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home.
Mr. Carter passed away December 15, 2013 at his home in Grand Saline. He was born October 26, 1912 in Grand Saline to Daniel Boone & Bertie Guinn Carter. He spent most all of his life in Grand Saline where he was a member of First Baptist Church and served as a Deacon. Mr. Carter retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 37 years of service. He was a lifelong member of the Odd Fellow Lodge; he received the Van Zandt County Man of the Year Award; owned/operated Carter Service Center; was a licensed Amateur Radio Operator and his call sign was KA5FCI; and he was a member of Prop Busters – a model airplane group. Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vera Lee Carter; two brothers, Leroy and Roberts (Bob); and two sisters, Myrtie Griffin and Grace Loper Lewis.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Billy Clyde & JoAnn Carter of Hot Springs, Arkansas; three daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Sue & Kenneth Richey of Mineola, Mary Lou & Billy Daniels of Bogata and Pat & James Giles of Grand Saline; brother, Bill Carter of Grand Saline; 14 grandchildren, Wayne Richey, Carla McClanahan, Ricky Daniels, Susan Shirley, Timothy Daniels, Renee Miller, Cheree Davis, Sharlene Garrett, Darlene Laprade, Kristi Giles, Dee Carter, Dawn Seeton, Terri Sanders and Collin Carter; 36 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Richey, Tim Daniels, Ricky Daniels, Collin Carter, Ryan Brown, Matt McKeen, Donovan Brown and Justin Miller.
Honorary pallbearers will be James Giles, Mark McClanahan, Billy DeForest Carter, Tony Miller, Jason LaPrade and Shawn Garrett.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.
