Otis Thurston Hawkins of Dallas, Texas passed away on February 27, 2014. He was born on August 20, 1922 in Wills Point, Texas to Eli Hawkins and Gladys Briggs Hawkins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Francyne Mayes, three brothers, Norman Hawkins, Jerrell Hawkins, JW Hawkins and his first wife, Cathryn June Hawkins.
Otis is survived by his wife of 29 years, Ann Hawkins and their son, Tyler Hawkins of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by his sister, Peggy Hoover and her husband, Donald of Arlington, Texas, a sister-in-law, Ruth Hawkins of Plano, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Otis joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and was Honorably Discharged in 1945 and saw action in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines in World War II. He re-enlisted in the Air Force in 1947 in the fire protection division at the Dallas Naval Air Station in Grand Prairie. During that time, and on his days off, his love of horticulture grew and he founded Hawkins Nursery & Landscape Co., Inc. and was a pioneer in landscape design and construction in the Texas market with notable projects completed such as Stonebridge Ranch and the Mansion on Turtle Creek.
Otis was active in the Texas Nursery & Landscape Association and was awarded the prestigious ARP Award for excellence in the horticulture field. He helped establish the Northeast Texas Nursery Growers Association which highlighted the growers in the east Texas area.
Otis volunteered his time at his son’s school, Parish Day School (now Parish Episcopal School) in numerous events and fund raising projects along with assisting in the construction of a new gym for the students.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Plano Presbyterian Hospital and the Hospice Plus program for their love and support during this difficult time. Also, the family would like to thank Livingston Otundo for his loving care for Otis over the last years.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Parish Episcopal School in Dallas, Texas, general scholarship fund in the name of Otis Thurston Hawkins.
The funeral will be held Friday, March 7th at 11 AM at Bartley Funeral Home, Grand Saline, Texas with a private burial later on in the day in Dallas.
