Gwendolyn Bailiff Hughes, 91, of Grand Saline, passed away, June 24, 2024, in Mineola. She was born November 24, 1932, in Marshall, Texas to Adolphus Jefferson & Mattie Marylene Teal Bailiff.

Gwen married Sherman Hughes, June 25, 1950, in Mineola, Texas. They lived in West Columbia, Celina and Dallas before moving to Grand Saline in Van Zandt Co. 38 years ago. Gwen worked for DISD while living in Dallas, then served on the Cozby-Germany Hospital Ladies Auxiliary once moving to the Grand Saline area. Gwen was named Outstanding Van Zandt County Woman of the Year in 2008. She loved to attend ball games! It did not matter if it was Sherman coaching, Mike & James coaching or playing, or one of her grandkids playing, she loved it all. Gwen was also an exceptional seamstress. She loved to cook and entertain guests and was always thinking about doing for other people. She especially enjoyed traveling with her family and they took many family vacations while the boys were growing up.

Gwen is preceded in death by her parents, A.J. & Marylene Bailiff; and husband, Sherman Hughes.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Hughes and wife Carolyn, and James Hughes and wife Jo Lynn; brother, Judson Bailiff and wife Dian of Lindale, sister, Carolyn Western of Ft. Worth; five grandchildren, Zach Hughes, Blake Hughes and wife Jenny, Adam Hughes and wife Skyler, Lindsey Martina and husband Tom, and Shelby Hughes; eight great-grandchildren, Drake Hughes, Wyatt Hughes, Harper Hughes, Aiden Hughes, Beckett Hughes, Brayden Martina, Brooklynn Martina, and Bennie Jo Martina; and numerous other relatives and friends.
