Ruth Slocum Shirley, just a few weeks shy of 100, of New Orleans, Hattiesburg, and her beloved Austin, passed away peacefully on October 4 at Longhorn Village.
She was born October 31, 1926, in Healdton, Oklahoma, to Raymond Allbright Hollingshead and Mary Myrtle Meyers. She was the first in her family to graduate college, at her beloved University of Texas, where she joined the Delta Gamma sorority, a fact she was proud of for the rest of her life.
She is remembered for her beautiful paintings, playing the guitar, being a great bridge partner, writing a book at age 85, and being an incredible wife, friend, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her grandchildren Lauren Zietz Hidalgo, Robert Kirby Shirley IV, and Mary Shirley Sheehan, as well as her great-grandchildren Jacob Hidalgo, Jonah Hidalgo, Indy Sheehan, and Madeleine Sheehan.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Kirby Shirley Jr., her brother Raymond Slocum, and her children, Robert Kirby Shirley III and Carrie Zietz.
