Services for Mr. Travis Shafer, 88 of Grand Saline, are scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, December 5, 2013 at Main Street Baptist Church with Bro. Mark Winskie officiating.
Interment will follow in Woodside Cemetery under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home.
Mr. Shafer passed away December 2, 2013 in Grand Saline. He was born April 26, 1925 in DeKalb to Luke Wylie & Lella Ann Day Shafer. He served in the US Navy during WWII on the USS Yorktown. He moved to Grand Saline in 1959 and became a member of Main Street Baptist Church. He was a highway patrolman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, 32nd Degree Mason and lifetime member of Grand Saline Masonic Lodge 1269, and retired as Sheriff of Van Zandt County in 1989 after 12 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 56 years, Edyth Lynn Shafer; son, Lukey Choice Shafer; 5 sisters, Minnie, Pearlie, Enois, Rosa and Cristell; and 3 brothers, Choice, Jim and Don.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, William “Bill” Shafer II and wife Sheila of Grand Saline and Bart Shafer and wife Donna of Carthage; daughter, Charolet Hazel of Grand Saline; sister and brother-in-law, Iva Joy Shaver and husband Bob of Austin; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.
The Masons will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital, Waco, TX.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
The family would like to recognize the service of the staff at Azalea Trails Care Center in Grand Saline.
